About The Girl with the Broken Heart

If you’ve ever had children, you know the excitement and anticipation leading up to your child’s birth.  You have hopes and dreams for your child and cannot wait to meet her.

But what if the unimaginable happens and you learn that your child is very, very sick?  How do you cope?  How do you plan?  How do you give your child everything she needs so that she can get better?  What do you do when you find out that your daughter is one of the 1 in 100 children born in the United States with a Congenital Heart Defect (CHD)?  And worse, that she has several CHDs at once?

Our nominated family for Best Christmas Ever knows how it feels to have their lives turned upside down by CHDs.  This brave single mother has sacrificed everything for her 2-year-old daughter, including giving up her job to care for her fragile child full time.  Her daughter requires round the clock care, with a feeding tube, oxygen, and a central line.

When she was pregnant, this mother had no indication that her daughter would have any issues post-birth.  She was anticipating taking her daughter home from the hospital and living a normal life.  However, just after she was born, doctors told the mother that the daughter had a long list of CHDs, including disposition of the great arteries, ventricular septal defect, hypoplastic aortic arch, hypoplastic right heart syndrome, and more.  There are so many severe defects that she’s already had 15 surgeries to correct them.  Even though her heart is functioning at only 25%, she’s been able to learn to walk, talk, and eat food by mouth – things that the doctors never expected.  She is an incredibly strong little girl!

 But it’s not enough.

In January, this little girl will be admitted to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN to await a heart transplant. She and her mother will be living in the hospital full time as they await news of a donor heart.  This is 142 miles from their home, so support will be limited.

That’s where Best Christmas Ever comes in!  With your generous gift, not only will we be able to provide a wonderful Christmas for the family, but we’ll also be able to support this mom with a life-changing financial gift to help her cope with the financial struggles of being a single mom with a very sick little girl living in a hospital for the foreseeable future.

 We appreciate your support!
